BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is an opensource software developed by the University of Berkeley (or its Space Science Lab) Framework for various distributed computing projects.

Provided are: a uniform infrastructure regarding the project servers, discussion forums and statistics as well as a corresponding Client. Participants in BOINC projects receive a cross-project account ID, which allows them to define common default settings for all the BOINC projects they use.

In September 2003, the first BOINC version was tested with SETI, in June 2004 Predictor@home_(beendet) was the first public project that ran only under BOINC. Today, more than 4.6 million people actively (as of October 1st, 2018) contribute on a variety of projects.

Client features

When BOINC runs as a screensaver, it displays a visualization of the project being worked on. Some projects have not implemented a graphic output. In this cas only the BOINC logo will be displayed (see List of Projects with graphics).


Achtung: Dieser Client kann in Unternehmensnetzwerken mit Sophos Antivirus und dem zugehörigen Add-on Client Control automatisch aufgespürt [1] und zentral abgeschaltet werden [2].

Installation

The installation runs for each BOINC project according to the same procedure:

  1. Download
    You can either download the BOINC client from the respective project homepage or directly at BOINC.
  2. Installation
    Instruction: Windows Icon windows 16.png, Linux Icon linux 16.png, MAC Icon macos 16.png
  3. Adding a project
    In this step you are asked for the project URL, email address and password. Then you will be redirected to the project homepage and can enter further information about his account. If further projects are to be calculated with the installed BOINC client, then another project URL must be added and again the email address and password is to be typed in.
  4. Joining a team
    On the project homepage search for the desired team (for example Team Rechenkraft) and join it by clicking on "Join this Team".
  5. Skin
    Next the BOINC client can still be provided with the Rechenkraft.net Skin or another.

Important: If you use the screensaver of BOINC or want to display graphics of the respective projects during normal operation, do not select the installation as a service when selecting the installation type. There are no graphics outputs available in this mode. If BOINC is installed as a system service, the system administrator will only see the BOINC icon in the system tray (bottom right). Registered non-administrators can not see the BOINC system service in the form of an icon and can therefore only identify it via the task manager.

BOINC can be fine-tuned via a configuration file cc_config.xml for special features.

Important info about Linux 64 bit

There are some bug reports on projects that support 64 bit Linux, but send only 32 bit applications to them. See BOINC/Linux_64 for problem solving.

Optimization of the client

"Optimized Clients" means either those self-compiled BOINC-Clients in which the benchmark code has been changed to get higher Credit values (without actually counting faster), as well as those from outside persons, e.g. for SSE have been optimized and actually works faster. For a detailed description, see the article optimized clients.

Remote control of BOINC

With the BOINC Manager you can remotely control a BOINC client on another computer via the IT network. Therefore you have to create the remote_hosts.cfg file in the BOINC directory on the target computer (starting with Boinc 6.4, the default is C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\BOINC for Windows XP and C:\ ProgramData\BOINC for Windows Vista) and store in this file the IP address of the remote computer, as well as the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg and write in this file a password in plain text. Then restart the BOINC client on the computer to be remotely controlled so that it re-reads the files. Then you can select in the BOINC Manager menu "Extras" the remote computer by specifying the IP address or the computer name and password.

Account manager

BOINC Account Manager are pages on the Internet that enable the management of the various computers and the various project accounts of a user via the Internet. They make it easier to log in to new projects, especially if you want to participate with multiple computers.

  • BAM! - somewhat complex, all projects included.
  • GridRepublic - easier to set up. For BOINC newcomers, not all projects included.

Statistics

The Boinc statistics on the project pages are often sorted by default according to the recent average credit. This value is not very meaningful. It's the average daily credit you've received lately. The values of this week are taken into account completely, those of last week half, those of the week before last week to a quarter, and so on. If you have some fast computers working on the project, so you have here a very high value quickly. If you abruptly abort the calculation, this value remains almost unchanged for a long time. The fairest sorting is obtained with overall credit .
